Marbella, located on the Costa del Sol in the south of Spain, is a haven both for party animals and for people who enjoy the quiet life. For those of us who enjoy fabulous weather, stunning sandy beaches, picturesque villages, delicious local food and, of course, a healthy does of glamorous living, Marbella has it all.


But although Marbella has built up a reputation over the years as a fantastically rich and luxuriant place to visit or indeed to live, we should not forget that there is more to Marbella than meets the eye. For although it is a fact that the town attracts wealthy tourists and the rich elite from across the globe, this does not mean that it is out of reach for the rest of us.


It is amazing for us to think that back in the 1940s, Marbella was just a small village in the south of Spain. Indeed, it wasn’t until the 1950s that things started to take off, and as its reputation grew it soon began to play host to some of the richest people on the planet. But behind the glitz and the glamor, there is more to Marbella than many of us realise.

Traditional Spain


If you want to experience traditional Spain, then there is plenty on offer in Marbella and all along the Costa del Sol. The region of Andalucia is the home of many of the most famous Spanish traditions, including flamenco dancing, tapas and bullfighting, without which any trip to Spain would seem incomplete.

Main Attractions


Essentially, the main attraction of Marbella is the town itself. Situated in a fantastically beautiful setting, we are left in awe of the stunning mountain views, the beautiful beaches, and the lush and tropical gardens that are found throughout the town. But on top of this, what of the main attractions for visitors to Marbella?

Puerto Banus


Puerto Banus is, to put it simply, the very height of excess. This stunning marina is perhaps the most famous leisure centre in the world, packed full of incredible yachts owned by the super rich, all of whom use the marina as their own personal showroom.


For those of us who are not in the same league, a walk around Puerto Banus is still a wonderful experience, and we can enjoy the entertainment provided by the sheer extent of wealth on display right before our eyes. And because it is also packed full of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as a fantastic aquarium, a casino and some great nightclubs, Puerto Banus is certainly one of the highlights of the town not to be missed.

Casco Antiguo


For those of us who fancy something altogether more peaceful, there are the cobbled streets of Casco Antiguo, which is the Old Town. Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the actual town, here we can find an area for peaceful walks and al fresco meals, and there are also a number of picturesque terraced houses lined along the roads. But despite being the Old Town, a real mix of old and new is clear to see, with the ancient buildings contrasting with new designer shops and cafés.

La Fontanilla Beach


For getting away from it all, we can head to the long, sandy and beautiful Fontanilla Beach. This is perhaps the most popular beach in the town, and in summer it can get quite crowded as the tourists and locals alike flock to enjoy a sunbathe and a swim. However, sun worshippers can always find space to lie down, and with a good selection of bars and a large number of on-duty lifeguards, many happy hours can be spent here simply enjoying the hot Andalucian sun.

Other Attractions


As well as the main attractions, there are also a number of smaller points of interest for us to enjoy, including Alameda Park, packed full of tropical flowers, fountains and striking statues, and the Bonsai Museum, showcasing perhaps the best collection of bonsai trees and wild olive trees in the world.

Making Marbella a Base


With so much to enjoy, Marbella makes the perfect base for either a tourist or a resident. With only a 40-minute drive to Málaga airport, Marbella has fantastic access, and on top of that it is a great base from which to explore the rest of Spain. With Cordoba, Granada and Seville all within easy reach, there is plenty on offer to enjoy.


So whether we go there for the golf, the food, the beaches, the sun or the glamorous lifestyle, Marbella has something on offer for us all.
